What Kind of Injuries Are Motorcyclists At Risk of Sustaining?

The lack of structure that motorcycles have is one of the main reasons many people enjoy riding them. Riders can feel more of the wind on their body and enjoy the excitement of the open road. As fun as riding a motorcycle seems, there is a dark side. There is less vehicle to shield the rider’s body in a motorcycle accident.

The risk of serious injury is an unavoidable aspect of being a biker.

Types of injuries motorcyclists sustain

When another vehicle collides into a motorcyclist, the biker is in danger of being thrown off the bike and sustaining serious injury. Common injuries motorcycle operators end up with include:

  • Road rash
  • Traumatic brain injuries
  • Broken bones
  • Spinal cord trauma

These injuries can range from mild to severe and are more likely to affect the head, neck and abdomen areas on the body. It is possible for bikers who are involved in low-speed accidents to end up with bone fractures and crushed spinal cords. It is also possible for bikers in accidents involving high speeds to end up with some mild bruises and lacerations.

Serious motorcycle crash injuries often lead to paralysis and disability for some bikers. Those who are fortunate enough to survive their accidents often face difficult recoveries. Depending on the extent of their injuries, they may need multiple surgeries and ongoing therapy to make a complete recovery. Some victims are not as fortunate and may require assistive medical care for the rest of their lives.

Ways motorcyclists may reduce injury risk

No matter how safe of a rider someone is, there may be times when a crash is imminent. The operator may not be able to maneuver or avoid the conditions that cause it. Riders can minimize the risk and severity of injury by wearing properly fitted safety gear, using a helmet, keeping the bike in good operational condition and using safe riding techniques.
