What are attributes I should look for in a divorce mediator?

During mediation, you might find yourself not just discussing emotional issues, but ones that are personal in nature or financially sensitive as well. This is why it’s important that once you and your ex have decided that pursuing an amicable divorce through mediation is best for you, you’ll want to find a mediator that you both can trust.

When you’re interviewing potential mediators that you’re looking to work with, you’ll want to assess whether they come off as both genuine and honest. It’s also important to find a mediator who’s not just going to guide you toward a settlement, but also empowers the two of you to make decisions that you both can feel comfortable with down the road.

If the mediator you’re interviewing with suggests that you or your spouse consult with your own attorneys about a certain issue, you shouldn’t take that as a sign that he or she isn’t doing their job. Instead, you should understand such a recommendation to be indicative of them trying to ensure that you make the most prudent decisions for your own life.

Another characteristic to look for in a mediator is someone who is a good listener. You’ll want the individual to be able to express compassion and to be able to empathize with you, especially when it’s clear that a particular concern is quite important to you.

At the same time, though, you want to look for a mediator that appears to be impartial. This will ensure that no matter what hot button issues are important to either spouse, each side will be allowed to be heard. It will ensure that you both are comfortable with decisions that are agreed to as well.

The final factor you should be on the lookout for when you’re looking to see if you can trust a prospective mediator is whether they’re willing or able to describe their approach to mediation. You’ll want them to be able to describe how they achieve solutions in some of the more complex situations that arise in settling divorces. This will be indicative of whether they are capable of reaching a resolution in your own case.

If you’re looking at mediation as a way of resolving your differences and reaching a settlement with you ex, then a Houston divorce mediation attorney can advise you how he or she can hep you achieve that.
